largest bodies of books published for indexers are published
by the American
Society of Indexers
and the Society
of Indexers (UK).

Training
for Indexers
The
newest addition to indexer education is the University
of California (Berkeley)’s distance learning course.
The
USDA Graduate School Correspondence Program in Basic
Indexing, now run by the National Independent
Study Center, has been the leading course of indexer
training in the United States.
A
distance-learning course is also offered by the Society
for Indexers (UK)
Some
professional indexers offer classes and private tutorials,
including Kari
Kells and Sherry
Smith.
Web-based
training in indexing of Web and intranet documents is
available from Kevin
Broccoli.
Tutorials
on indexing in Word and PageMaker are available from
Jan
Wright.
Susan
Holbert offers a 3-cassette video of an
actual day-long indexing workshop which offers a good
introduction to indexing skills and methods.
