Professional Organizations

There are large active professional indexing organizations in the United States (asindexing.org), Canada (indexingsociety.ca), Australia and New Zealand (aussi.org), and the United Kingdom (indexers.org.uk):

Literature on Indexing

Janet Perlman is author/editor of Running an Indexing Business, 2nd edition, ITI, Inc. for American Society of Indexers, 2001. Click here to find out how to buy the book.

The largest bodies of books published for indexers are published by the American Society of Indexers and the Society of Indexers (UK). Many other excellent resources are available, some from major publishers and some self-published. For a complete bibliography of indexing literature, click here.

Kari Kells, Jan Wright, and Mary Sue Stephenson have lists of supplementary readings for indexing students and professionals on their web sites.

Training for Indexers

The newest addition to indexer education is the University of California (Berkeley)’s distance learning course.

The USDA Graduate School Correspondence Program in Basic Indexing, now run by the National Independent Study Center, has been the leading course of indexer training in the United States.

A distance-learning course is also offered by the Society for Indexers (UK)

Some professional indexers offer classes and private tutorials, including Kari Kells and Sherry Smith.

Web-based training in indexing of Web and intranet documents is available from Kevin Broccoli.

Tutorials on indexing in Word and PageMaker are available from Jan Wright.

Susan Holbert offers a 3-cassette video of an actual day-long indexing workshop which offers a good introduction to indexing skills and methods.

Finding an Indexer

Disclaimer: These links are provided as a service to authors and publishers to assist them in finding an indexer. No guarantee or recommendation is made for the quality of work any of indexers may provide. The indexers in these directories pay for their listings.

The online searchable Indexer Locator of the American Society of Indexers can assist in finding an indexer with specific expertise as will the Canadian Society's Register.

A listing service organized and maintained by Charles Anderson is maintained at Indexers Unlimited Clearinghouse.
